The quest for the falls

After the spectacle of Chimney Rock and the Hickory Nut falls, we decided to go hunting for more waterfalls.

On the south side of Asheville, lies Transylvania Country, the self proclaimed Land of Waterfalls. 260 to be exact....and who knows, being Transylvania and all, maybe a vampire or two. We spent a morning in Asheville and then set off to see some of these waterfalls.

Bridal Veil Falls was the first target, sounded great in the brochure...said that you could walk behind the falls...

Not sure that they actually wanted anyone to find the place...We thought we were on the right track, following the rather sparse directions in the brochure, the GPS concured, then all of a sudden we find ourselves about 10 miles deep on a funky little dirt road...Cue the Deliverance music please...Then like magic, we pop out of the woods on a paved road and find that we've driven in about a 40 mile circle around the Dupont Forrest, where theoretically, the falls is located. A sign would have been nice.

We said some nasty things about the man who wrote the brochure and his directions and bailed on the Bride...We did find the entrance to a trail that led up to Hooker Falls. Nice hike and a nice little falls but after a few hours searching, we thought we deserved a bit more.

The following morning, after checking out of the cabin, we once again headed towards Transylvania. This time the target was Pearson's Falls...named after the man that owned the tract of land. This one actually has signs that pointed to the entrance. Novel concept.

About 20 or so steps into the path it felt like the enchanted forrest.

 The trail up to the falls was quite spectacular....the whole way I expected some elves or leprechauns to come jumping out...

 ...or perhaps some naked nymphs...

After a 20 minute walk you could hear the water....we were approaching the falls...

The payoff was well worth it....a very pretty cascading falls...There is something about that sound.

I expect that someday we'll take another run at Bridal Falls, but for now, this one was just fine....
