A day at the Zoo

For our last activity on this visit, we decided to visit the North Carolina Zoo at Asheboro. At 1,458 acres , it is the largest walk-through natural-habitat zoo in the US. The zoo has two main areas Africa and North America. The day was quite overcast which didn't help the photos....

We started our visit on the Africa side of town.

First up were Zebras and Ostriches....Zebras certainly are interesting looking critters....

The lioness was a bit unhappy and was letting us know about it...You could feel it when she yelled...she was by herself which may have been the issue.

Giraffes were fun to watch. Only problem here was an oak tree that was dropping really large acorns...ones that would definitely leave a mark if they got you.  The Giraffes are really quite graceful when then bend down to get something off the ground.

Mr Elephant....There were a bunch of these guys...including a couple that Kimberly thought were dancing. The African Plains exhibit was just under 50 acres...Nice to see a zoo that had so much open space for the animals to roam around.

The cougar....Kimberly kept calling this guy kitty kitty....Not sure that one would refer to a cat of this size as kitty....Never did figure out what he was studying so intently.

Couple of big nasty gators in the swamp exhibit on the North American side...The one on the left was probably 15 feet tip to tip.

The Polar Bear, also named Willy, didn't seem to care for the afternoon heat.

The Elk were the last thing we saw....Don't think the big guy liked us being that close to his girlfriend. He made a noise, while looking at us, that scared the crap outta me...

All in all, a very well done zoo.  A nice way to wrap up my trip. Next up, start getting the restaurant ready to reopen.
